SF Kennels Skyfire Australian Cattle Dog

Our Foundation The following is a list of cattle dogs we have owned that developed the foundation for establishing our lines. In order to breed good dogs, you first have to buy good dogs. There were many aspects of the breed that we desired in a single dog (i.e., we were VERY picky - and still are). If you are as picky as me, you really have to search to find the right ones, and typically other breeders do not want to part with the one you want! Structually, I have always been a "trueness" type of person. I do not like slop in "east to west". In other words, a dog that front feet point out, or a dogs with rear hocks that point in. This type of slop results in movement that is not entirely going forward (leg goes in a bit as it moves forward). Any movement that is not focused on sending the dog forward is wasted energy and thus bad structure. The best way for me to judge structure on a dog is to see the dog alert standing freely, and moving. I hope to someday add an informative section to this webpage that will show pictures of the good and bad aspects of trueness.
Past Dogs of Skyfire Kennels Skyfire Double Trouble, CGC
The foundation of Skyfire Kennels began when we purchased our first Australian Cattle Dog, Skyfire Double Trouble, CGC. "Rowdy " is out of Walk-About Bad Buzzy Brown and CH Cedardell's Blue Willow, HT. Rowdy was shown a few times and obtained points toward his championship. He also earned his Canine Good Citizenship certificate and was trained in Agility. Rowdy had great herding instinct, was very trainable, mellow, yet protective. One of the biggest advantages Rowdy had was I acquired him while in college and he was with me 24-7. Went to class with me and to work with me. He was VERY well socialized from a young age, which is very important in a cattle dog. Cattle dogs can not be allowed to be "aggressive" towards people OR other dogs. That HAS to be enforced from a very young age. That is probably the biggest reason so many books you read say "Cattle dogs are not for everyone".
Corral West More Than a Mask DOB 1/13/96 (CH. Lanbart's Drive'm Wild x Bunjis Desert Storm Stormy)
Kylie was purchased from Corral West kennels in Colorado. She was a wonderfully sweet dog. She was shown a number of times and acquired a few points toward her championship. She was trained in Obedience and did some Agility. At two years old her hips were examined by x-ray (OFA) and would not pass. Because I do not use dogs in my breeding program that are not structurally sound, I returned her to her breeder in Colorado for placement in a home where she could be spayed. Shallazar's Jurnee to the Edge (CH. Briarmoor Cutting Edge x CH Landmar Shallazar Tahoe)
Jurnee lived with us for only a few months, but was quite a crowd pleaser. She has an unforgettable "wave" (stand on her back legs and waves her front two paws) and a sparking personality. I had my choice between her and "Snap" (see below) and choose to keep Snap. Jurnee returned to Shallazar and is now one of the foundation bitches of Shallazar.
Shallazar's Double Deuce (CH. Briarmoor Cutting Edge x Am/Can AOM CH Dreamtime Double Dragon)
Deuce was shown on a limited basis as a puppy. He grew to almost 22" (too tall to show). Because I want to focus on correct size and proportions in my lines, I did not want to use Deuce in my breeding program. His breeder Lynn found a great home for him to live as a pet.
Shallazar SF Snapdragon (CH. Briarmoor Cutting Edge x Am/Can AOM CH Dreamtime Double Dragon) The foundation to our current lines was Shallazar SF Snapdragon. "Snap" was shown on a limited basis and earned 11 points and one 5 point major, but was never finished due to an injury. During her limited show career, she placed in the 1998 Puppy Sweeps class at the ACDCA Nationals in Ventura, CA, and won Winner Bitch and Best of Winners at the CACDC Regional Specialty in Portland Oregon. Her first litter produced 3 Champions - Alie, Promise and Max. She produced two litters in her breeding career before being retired to life as a couch potato. Her second litter both dogs that have been shown are pointed. She now lives in Pasco, WA with Ronda. |
